Installation has started of a new tidal stream generator

Date:
20/06/2008
Following the recent granting of planning permission by the Secretary of State, John Hutton, the Pulse Stream 100 tidal energy converter project has commenced installation in the Humber Estuary, one kilometre off the south shore of the river between Immingham and Grimsby. Piling of the foundation structure was completed in May 08 by contractors Humber Work Boats.

The structure is now ready to receive the main structure and foils, which are to be delivered later in the summer. The steelwork for the nacelle and associated structures is being produced by Corus Northern Engineering Services based in Scunthorpe.

The first pile being prepared for piling. The structure on which the foil assembly will sit once installed can be seen at deck level.

The second pile being driven in to place. The piles are driven more than 15m into the seabed to provide a stable platform for the system.

The collar structure (above left) carries the hydrofoil assembly for the system, and can be raised up each pile to expose the system for maintenance. The hydrofoils (above right) are constructed from glass and carbon re-inforced plastic, and are shown here if a dry-fit assembly completion.

The Pulse Stream 100, a large scale marine prototype demonstrator, will be the first shallow water tidal stream generator to be connected to the National Grid via a transformer located at Millennium Chemicals, directly onshore from the device.
